New year. Fresh Perspectives.
Conversations are powerful vehicles for change when our hearts are open, and a recent one with my buddy has resonated within my soul so much this week.  The conversation revolved around trying to repeat the successes of the previous year and how much pressure there is to continue to impel ourselves forward–either inside or outside pressures.  But it sort of struck me these last few days that life is not always well-lived in the repeating of successes or even the constant push.  Life is not a repeat or a 3-peat or whatever-peat year to year.  And, it’s beyond the goals and the recognition; it’s in the intention–the choice of what we want our year to look like and what and how we choose depends on where we are in that moment.  Each year can look so completely different from the previous one. Sometimes we need to just breathe. For a week or a month or for an entire year.  But that choice to just breathe can be so freeing because it’s making the conscious choice to bring our life back to center.  And some years provide the strength and courage and opportunities to push farther and harder and with more strength than the previous year.  We are ready.  But, each of these choices is gifts and provide everything that we need in that moment….success, achievement, strength, passion….or just breath.
We can never doubt our own ability to bring it back to center.  We can never doubt our ability to achieve. New can never doubt our ability to love fully. We can never doubt what it feels like to say no for our hearts or for our family. We can never doubt what it feels like when that grace we give reaches the hurting inside.  And we can never doubt what it feels like to always stand our ground where hope can be found.
So as I am standing in the doorway of 2015, I am ready for what lies ahead of me.  I have turned the page.  2014 has been written, and I am proud of my year.  I am proud of what was created and harnessed and achieved and loved and nurtured. I am proud of the lessons learned and the grace I received. But most of all, I am proud that I never doubted my ability to bring it back to center.  So as the calendar flips to a new year, I challenge you to create your year for you….a year chock full of goals and successes, or a year to simply breathe in the simplicity and to leave the challenges behind for a little while.
And as we close 2014 and open our hearts to the possibilities that 2015 holds, I leave you with what one of my favorite yoga instructors says to close his classes…. peace and victorious you. Namaste.

Renter’s Insurance and why it ROCKS!

Do you know what renters insurance is?  You would be surprised to know that  many people don’t know about it and its benefits. Most property management companies these days are starting to require that renters have renters insurance, and most people that have never had it, don’t know much about it, or might have reservations about spending the extra money. Below, I’ll give you the little skinny on it in hopes that everyone starts to realize much renters insurance rocks and is a great thing to have for your own benefit!

Renter’s insurance is incredibly affordable; and more so that most people even realize. The usual price for renters insurance is between $10-$30 dollars depending on how many items you own and their replacement value.  An insurance agent can help you determine the value of your items and you can usually get your insurance set up on the phone in 10-15 mins.

Did you know that renter’s insurance can provide coverage for items and incidents inside and outside of an apartment or rental house?  Crazy right?  It’s not just to cover damages within your rental.  Most renters are usually aware that belongings stolen or damaged within their homes could be covered by renters insurance, but fewer may be aware that items stolen from their cars could be covered too.

(Example: if you leave your laptop in the car and its stolen your renters insurance will cover it)

(Example: if a renter whose child floods an apartment bathroom by leaving water running in a bathtub would likely end up paying out of pocket for the damage if they don’t have that valuable renter’s insurance.)

A landlord’s insurance only covers the structure and does not cover contents, and having that added policy can also cover damages caused by that pesky maintenance issue that arise and may damage your belongings.

Another benefit could be coverage for accidents inside a renter’s homes in which visitors are injured and responsible for the damages. This can be especially important if you throw parties or frequently have guests in your home. And, these policies usually include some no-fault medical coverage for guests. (No-fault coverage means policyholders don’t have to wait for a court decision to determine who’s liable for an in-home accident before claiming the coverage provided by their renters insurance.)

AND… But wait, there’s more!

“(Renters insurance) covers something referred to as ALE, or Additional Living Expenses, should a fire or other calamity require you to live elsewhere,” Lehman says. “If, for example, an apartment is damaged in a fire and your rent was $1,000 a month but you had to live elsewhere that costs $1,100 a month, it would cover the extra $100 for rent up to the policy limits.”

ALE would also cover food, living and clothing costs if you have to leave your home for more than 72 hours during one of these calamities!

Just think of all the possibilities and positives that renters insurance can help you!  If you have any questions or are interested in renter’s insurance there are plenty of agencies.  Our first suggestion is check with your automobile insurance company.  Having both under one policy generally gets added discounts for having those multiple lines of coverage, making it even cheaper!

The moral here?  Go get it!  The small cost that you pay each year gets you a TON of coverage and a TON of piece of mind.

Behind the Red Door

The symbolism of the color ‘red’ has transcended time, culture and ecology. Mother Nature even uses it to say, “Hey! Notice Me! …I standout for a reason.” Our western culture uses it to make important objects and structures stand apart and be discernible, such as stop lights or signs. Adaptations from the East have fused together the ideal that a red front door is good luck. So naturally, you can imagine why a restaurant named “The Red Door” physically and metaphorically tells native San Diegan and visiting restaurateurs, alike, in its undeniably bold shade, “STOP and check me out! Your taste buds just got lucky!”

If you’re looking for a dining experience as brilliant, yet subtly elegant, as the many shades of ‘red,’ venture into the trendy, but understated, neighborhood of Mission Hills. Amongst an array of truly unique and eclectic restaurants and boutiques lies this gem of an eatery.

As you walk into its cozy quarters, life through friendly banter and soft “Mm mms” fill the room.  The perfect place to impress a prospective partner or mingle amongst friends.  Its quaint interior is usually packed to the brim with guests, making reservations on holidays and prime dinning hours is a must.  Otherwise you will miss out!Red Door Restaurant & Wine Bar

The atmosphere teeters between comfortably-casual to semi-formal, with its simple, but chic, décor and front-house layout. But I’ll let you in on a not-so-secret…the real magic happens in the back, where locally grown, family farmed, produce meets masterfully prepared proteins. On a personal note, if you’re a fan of “the other white meat,” I highly recommend ordering the Braised Pork Cheeks for a starter…You’ll wish it never ends. There is also an impressive wine list at your disposal—or I guess in this case I should say at your consumption. And, if you’re having trouble making a selection, the friendly and attentive staff is readily available to help guide you through this culinary excursion.

Let’s not forget dessert! If you can still ingest one more exquisite creation it has to be one of these delicate and decadent pieces of art, made with only the freshest seasonal ingredients.

If you’re mouth isn’t watering by now, let me tell you mine is…and as having experienced this first hand, it’s a must-do for foodies hungry for a taste of San Diego’s finest.

Add it to your bucket list, tell Siri to bookmark it… it’s that good! If you’re in love with food like I am, then you should never settle for run-of-the-mill. So treat yourself! You deserve it. Make it a monthly routine? Meet style, sophistication, innovation and flavor all at the same place: “The Red Door.”
